Micro-Needling for Hair Regrowth

micro-needling for hair regrowth

Hair loss is a very common condition for many men and even some women. Losing hair prematurely can be a very discouraging experience for many people. This unwelcome occurrence can make a person feel like their youth has ended much too soon and lead to feelings of embarrassment and self-consciousness, negatively affecting one’s relationships and work. As such, many people come to our office inquiring about micro-needling for hair regrowth.

A Look at Micro-Needling

Few people have heard of micro-needling, but it is a skin rejuvenation treatment that has helped many people revitalize their skin. Since scalp health is very important to the formation and maintenance of strong hair follicles, this treatment offers the promise of helping those suffering from hair loss.

The treatment involves passing a special device over the skin’s surface. Each pass of this device creates many tiny micro-channels in the skin. This has been shown to trigger the body into depositing fresh collagen into the treatment sites. Not only does the treatment area receive fresh collagen, but some of the surrounding skin tissue is also affected.

The main applications of micro-needling are treating skin conditions like lines, wrinkles, folds, creases, scarring and discoloration. The treatment is similar to a chemical peel or some types of laser skin resurfacing in terms of its ability to address these skin conditions.

What About Micro-Needling for Hair Regrowth?

Evidence suggests that micro-needling combined with PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, has some benefits for those suffering from hair loss. The same skin remodeling that is triggered for facial skin may also help improve the condition of the scalp and lead to the maintenance of current hair count or actually increase hair count and hair shaft thickness.

Micro-needling dramatically increases the effectiveness of topical agents like PRP. The skin has an outer barrier known as the stratum corneum. This layer is composed of dead skin cells, fats, oils and cellular debris. It prevents molecules of a certain size from penetrating the skin.

The many tiny openings created by the micro-needling process can be thought of as channels that allow solutions like PRP to bypass this barrier and deliver results to parts of the skin that otherwise would be prevented from their delivery. This should significantly increase the impact of PRP.

It is important to remember that micro-needling and PRP usually provides the best results after a series of treatment sessions. You must allow some time in between sessions for the micro-channels to heal normally before beginning another round. This ensures that your body is able to remodel the treatment site and deposit fresh collagen to form new scalp tissue, which pushes up from below the treated area.
