What Is Submental Fat?
The area underneath your chin is referred to as the submental area, and as a result of weight fluctuations and the aging process, it is common to accumulate extra fat in this area, leading to a double chin. This extra fat is difficult to target with diet and exercise, but Kybella injections can help.
Who Can Develop Submental Fat?
While submental fat is common in those who are overweight, the presence of fat pads in this area is determined more by genetics and facial structure as much as it is by weight. A double chin is also possible in people who are very thin, as well as in people who have recently lost weight. If your parents had a double chin, you are more likely to have one even if you lose weight.
A recessed chin or short neck can also create the appearance of a double chin, even if there is very little fat in the area. Aging and a loss of skin elasticity under the chin can also create the look of a double chin. Not all of these concerns can be targeted with Kybella, so a consultation is important to determine your candidacy.
What Is Kybella in NYC?
Comprised of deoxycholic acid, Kybella® is a fast, easy treatment that is injected with a fine needle into the fatty tissue in your lower face. Deoxycholic acid is found naturally in the body and helps it break down and absorb dietary fat. When used in Kybella injections treatment, deoxycholic acid permanently destroys fat cells and keeps them from accumulating or storing fat in the future.
Once the membranes of these fat cells break down, the body recognizes the contents as waste and clears them through the lymphatic system. Because the fat cells are eliminated instead of shrunk, they cannot come back.
What Are the Benefits of Kybella?
This innovative treatment is the first of its kind and offers multiple benefits to men and women, including:
- Quick treatment times that are easy to fit into any busy schedule
- A nonsurgical solution that requires no downtime or recovery
- Subtle, natural-looking facial enhancement that can tighten your lower face without giving away that you have “had work done.”
- Ingredients that are found in the body, reducing the risk of adverse reactions
Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella?
Kybella is not a substitute for diet and exercise or a weight loss solution, but it can help create tighter, more youthful-looking contours in your chin through a series of strategic injections. During your consultation with our medical team, your overall health, medical history, treatment expectations and aesthetic goals will be evaluated to determine if Kybella injections are the best course of treatment for you.
Before Your Kybella Treatment
Preparation at our med spa begins with your consultation, where we will map out your submental area, document baseline photos, examine your facial structure and skin quality and review any medications you are taking that may impact the treatment. We will give you preparation instructions about any medication changes or adjustments to your skincare routine that are recommended before starting Kybella.
If you have a special event coming up, we recommend that you schedule this treatment well in advance since swelling is usually present in the submental area as the medication works on existing fat cells. If you have questions about combining Kybella with other treatments, bring this up during your consultation.
What Kybella Treatments Are Like
The appointment usually takes less than an hour. Your injector will apply a topical anesthetic to the skin to reduce discomfort and mark the submental area with a special grid to guide injections. A series of small injections is placed under the chin a few millimeters apart, until the entire area is treated. The number of injections varies depending on the amount of submental fat.
Injections can cause a warm or stinging sensation after each injection. Swelling may begin almost immediately and is expected as the deoxycholic acid engages with fat cells. You can drive yourself home after your treatment or go back to work, though some people choose to schedule this treatment over a weekend because of the swelling.
Aftercare Following Kybella Treatments
Swelling peaks in the first two to three days after your appointment and makes the lower face look fuller before it begins to recede. During this time, you may have tenderness, firmness and numbness under the chin that can last for two to four weeks. Visible redness and bruising often fade within the first week and the area will feel and look normal at around the one-month mark. During this time, you can reduce discomfort and swelling by:
- Applying Cold Compresses: Use a clean, covered ice pack for ten to fifteen minutes at a time during the first forty-eight hours to reduce swelling and tenderness.
- Sleeping With Your Head Elevated: Prop your head on an extra pillow for the first few nights so fluid drains away from the jawline rather than pooling overnight.
- Skipping Strenuous Exercise: Avoid heavy lifting, hot yoga and intense cardio for twenty-four to forty-eight hours to limit blood flow to the area while it settles.
- Avoiding Massaging the Area: Let the product do its work undisturbed. Rubbing or pressing on the submental region can move the solution outside the intended zone.
Kybella Results
Results may vary, and multiple sessions may be necessary in order to achieve your aesthetic goals. Final contour changes typically appear four to six weeks after each session as the body clears the destroyed fat cells through its normal metabolic processes. Because Kybella damages fat cells at the source, the improvement is considered long-lasting once your target shape is reached. The change is often most noticeable in photos taken from the side, where the angle between the jaw and neck becomes more defined.
How Many Appointments Will I Need?
Patients need anywhere from one to six treatments to see the full results of Kybella. After each session, the body needs time to clear the destroyed fat cells, so we schedule each appointment four to six weeks apart. Leaving time in between sessions also allows us to assess the progress that has been made before proceeding with the next appointment. The number of treatments you need will be based on how much fat is in the submental area and how your body responds to the treatment.
How Much Does Kybella Cost?
Bella Tu Med Spa offers Kybella for $1,000. This covers one session, so your total investment will depend on how many sessions you and your provider decide on together. We review cost and financing options openly during your consultation.
FAQs About Kybella
Are there any side effects of Kybella?
As with injectable treatment, slight bruising, swelling, and redness may occur at injection sites but should subside in a day or two. Deoxycholic acid is found naturally in the body, which significantly reduces the risk of adverse reactions. Kybella has a proven profile of safety and efficacy, with thousands of treatments performed worldwide.
Can I combine Kybella with other treatments?
You may consider combining your procedure with a simple facial or microneedling for a complete makeover. This treatment can pair well with skin-tightening options since Kybella does not address loose skin. Other treatments like neuromodulators can address facial lines and platysma bands, and dermal fillers can contour the jawline and cheek for a more defined profile.
How long does Kybella last?
Because the fat cells are destroyed rather than shrunk, the cells treated with Kybella do not return. Maintaining a stable weight preserves your result; significant weight gain can cause nearby, untreated fat cells to enlarge and alter the contour.
What areas can Kybella treat?
Kybella is FDA-approved for fat beneath the chin. Some injectors use it off-label for small pockets of fat elsewhere on the body, but at Bella Tu Med Spa, we focus its use on the submental region, where the clinical evidence is strongest and results are most predictable.
Has Kybella been studied?
Kybella received FDA approval in April 2015 based on two clinical trials that enrolled more than 1,000 adults with moderate to severe submental fat. Deoxycholic acid itself has been researched for decades as part of normal digestion, which is part of why the product has a well-documented safety record when delivered by trained medical injectors.
