Chemical Peels

peels-img

Even if we maintain a consistent, high-quality skincare routine, sometimes our skin needs a reset. Perhaps you have acne scars from your twenties, or dark spots that appeared during pregnancy or fine lines that seemed to show up overnight. At Bella Tu Med Spa in Nyack, NY, we offer a variety of chemical peels to resurface and refresh your skin.

Does the term “chemical peel” make you picture red, peeling skin that keeps you homebound for weeks? It’s time to update that mental image. Modern peels range from gentle lunchtime treatments to more intensive resurfacing options, and no matter what peel you choose, the Bella Tu team’s expertise means you get results without unnecessary downtime or drama.

What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a professional skin treatment that uses exfoliating acids like glycolic acid, salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and retinoic acid to lift away damaged surface cells and promote collagen renewal. As the outer layer of your skin sheds, clearer, smoother skin is revealed underneath.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

When an exfoliating acid is applied to your skin, it breaks down the proteins that hold dead and damaged cells together. By loosening the outermost layer of skin, it can shed more completely than it would through the skin’s natural renewal cycle. The peel also helps the skin activate a repair response that increases collagen and elastin production in the days following the treatment.

What Concerns Can a Chemical Peel Treat?

Chemical peels are an effective treatment option for a wide variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Sun damage and uneven pigmentation
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Fine lines and early signs of aging
  • Dull or rough texture
  • Large pores and congested skin
  • Melasma and post-inflammatory discoloration

Basic Types of Chemical Peels

Light Chemical Peels

Light chemical peels work at the surface level of the skin, targeting only the outermost layer called the epidermis. They typically use lower concentrations of acids, and there is little to no downtime. These peels are a good place to start if you have never had a peel before.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium peels penetrate past the epidermis and into the upper layer of the dermis. A greater depth means a more pronounced skin response, including noticeable peeling that can last several days. This level of treatment is often used for moderate sun damage, uneven skin tone, fine lines and acne scarring.

Deep Chemical Peels

Deeper peels reach the mid-dermis and involve substantial remodeling in the skin. Because of this, it is only suitable for select patients. Recovery takes longer, and the treatment is usually done only once.

What Ingredients Are Used in Chemical Peels?

  • Glycolic Acid: Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size of all the alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), which allows it to penetrate more deeply into the skin than most surface-level exfoliants. It also stimulates collagen production and addresses fine lines and sun damage as it accelerates the natural shedding process.
  • Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and can cut through sebum (the skin’s natural oil) and travel directly into the pore lining. It is one of the most effective ingredients for acne-prone or congested skin. It also has natural anti-inflammatory properties, which can help calm redness from breakouts.
  • Retinol and Retinoic Acid (Vitamin A): Vitamin A derivatives like retinoic acid bind to receptors inside skin cells and influence how they develop and turn over. They are a good tool for reducing fine lines and fading discoloration.
  • Lactic Acid and Other AHAs (Mandelic, Malic, Citric): Lactic acid is a gentler AHA derived from milk and is a good option for sensitive skin types. Mandelic acid, derived from bitter almonds, shares this gentler profile and has an added antibacterial quality that makes it useful for acne as well as hyperpigmentation. Malic and citric acids are often blended with other AHAs to enhance exfoliation and brighten skin tone.
  • Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA): TCA is a non-organic acid that causes a controlled coagulation of skin proteins, which triggers the skin to push out the damaged tissue and rebuild from beneath. Its strength can be adjusted by varying the concentration and can treat everything from mild pigmentation to deeper wrinkles and scarring.
  • Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid): L-Ascorbic Acid is the most bioavailable form of Vitamin C, meaning it’s the version the skin can absorb and use. In peels, it brightens uneven skin tone by interfering with the enzyme responsible for melanin (pigment) production, while also providing antioxidant protection against environmental damage.

What to Expect During Your Chemical Peel at Bella Tu

Your Consultation

Every treatment starts with a one-on-one consultation. We’ll assess your skin and recommend the ideal peel for your goals. This is also a good time to share any medications you are taking and the skincare that you use, as some, like retinoids or certain antibiotics, can affect how your skin responds to exfoliating acids.

Preparing for Your Treatment

In the two weeks before your peel, we will ask you to stop using active ingredients like retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and exfoliating acids at home since they can make the skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation during treatment. If you have had a lot of sun exposure recently, it is worth waiting until your skin has recovered before scheduling a chemical peel. Keep your skin free of any makeup or other products on the day of your treatment.

During the Treatment

Peels are performed in our relaxing spa setting. We apply the acid solution to the skin, sometimes after a topical anesthetic. Depending on the formula, you may feel mild tingling or warmth. The treatment typically lasts 30–45 minutes, after which we may neutralize the solution to stop the exfoliation process. Some peels, like the SkinMedica peels, do not require this step because they self-neutralize after several hours. Most clients can resume their daily activities immediately afterward.

After the Peel

Post-treatment experiences vary depending on the peel. Lighter peels may cause minimal flaking, while medium peels involve visible peeling for several days.

Common side effects:

  • Mild redness or dryness
  • Peeling (usually begins two to three days post-treatment)
  • Temporary tightness or sensitivity

We’ll provide a detailed aftercare plan, including:

  • Hydrating skincare
  • Sun protection
  • Avoiding harsh products for five to seven days

When Will I See Results?

Some clients notice brighter skin within a day. Full results typically appear over seven to ten days as your skin peels and renews.

Chemical peel results are cumulative. For optimal results, we typically recommend a series of three to six treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart, especially for stubborn pigmentation or acne scars.

Is a Chemical Peel Right for You?

You may be a great candidate for a peel if you:

  • Want to refresh your complexion without downtime
  • Have concerns like acne, sun damage, or uneven texture
  • Are seeking a noninvasive way to support aging skin
  • Want to reverse signs of summer exposure and prep for fall
  • Have realistic expectations and are consistent with skincare

Chemical peels are safe for all skin types when performed by trained professionals using the correct formulation.

FAQs About Chemical Peels

Are chemical peels good for your skin?

With the right professional guidance, chemical peels can be beneficial for a wide range of skin concerns. It is important to work with a professional to match the right acid and type of chemical peel to your specific skin type.

Do chemical peels help with marionette lines?

Chemical peels can reduce the visibility of marionette lines, the creases that form between the corners of the mouth and the chin as collagen breaks down with age. Medium peels may be most effective here, as they stimulate collagen remodeling in the dermis where these lines originate. For more pronounced lines, we may recommend combining a peel with another treatment like filler or microneedling.

How much does a chemical peel cost?

The cost of a chemical peel varies depending on the type of peel and the number of sessions recommended. We will give you a clear breakdown of costs during your consultation.

How long will a chemical peel last?

A light peel may refresh your skin for four to six weeks, while the collagen remodeling triggered by a medium or deeper peel can produce results that last longer. Consistent sun protection and a good skincare routine will help extend your results.

How often can I get a chemical peel?

Light peels can typically be repeated every four to six weeks as part of an ongoing skincare routine. Medium peels are usually spaced several months apart to give the skin enough time to complete its healing and remodeling process.

Can chemical peels help with acne scars?

Chemical peels for acne scars accelerate cell turnover and stimulate collagen production in the areas where scarring has altered the skin’s texture. Superficial scars, including post-inflammatory discoloration, often respond well to this type of treatment, though multiple sessions may need to be scheduled.

What is the best chemical peel for first-time patients?

A light peel using glycolic or lactic acid is typically the best starting point, as it allows your skin to acclimate to the exfoliation process without a prolonged recovery period. First-time patients may also benefit from seeing how their skin responds before moving on to anything deeper. We’ll use your consultation to assess your skin and recommend a protocol.
